As a Cambodian-American, I find this an eye opener. My mother and family members would tell me stories about their past living in Cambodia. The music, movies, food, and everything else that made them smile was taken away from them because of genocide. Now imagine your husband being taken away from you to be killed and losing your two children from starvation. My mother who became a widow and grieved over the lost of her two children found the strengthen to fight her way to safety. She knew she had to move on for the safety of my oldest brother and sister. My brother at that time was 5 years old and my sister was still in the womb. She was and still is a strong woman. And now I know the sacrifices my mother had made for her children. And this movie is a great example of their struggles.

I'm Cambodian-American and my parents entered the US as refugees during the Khmer Rouge. Nobody asked her to do this, so it's so amazing for Angelina Jolie to care so much about her son's heritage and the Khmer people by working on this. Thank you on behalf of the Khmer/Cambodian community. In case if anyone is interested, the artist singing in the background is, I believe, to be "Ros Sereysothea". One of my favorite oldie singer.

I love that's important to her for her child to know who he is, to not force him to assimilate through the identity of a culture not his own.
@disarray82447 жыл бұрын
I understand what you are saying but he has been in the USA since he was a baby. The USA is his home. He doesn't have to assimilate to be American. It's good she is letting him know where he came from but he doesn't need to assimilate to the culture of the USA.
@shadowboxing70297 жыл бұрын
The USA is his home yes, but it isn't necessarily who he will identify as (he may do) and he is entitled to have that choice, she is making that choice available to him because regardless of how much he may think of himself as an American, some people will always put him into a category instead of accepting that he is just American because he is and looks Asian. At the very least America is not an Asian country let alone mainly composed of Cambodians, this will be impossible for him to ignore and others as they try to put him into a box, the better to categorise him like Indian Americans, African Americans, Latin Americans and then just Americans who the default is to those who are white. His biological family are all tied to Cambodia, their history, their culture that doesn't disappear because he's now an American citizen.
@disarray82447 жыл бұрын
People need to stop labeling themselves/others by race/gender. I believe that is the main problem in the world today. People want to be treated equal but then put themselves/others in separate groups. Also he was raised in the USA therefore most likely he identifies way more with the people/culture of the USA than he ever will with the Khmer people. He may look like them but most likely that is all he will ever truly have in common with them. Their customs are very different than here. The Khmers have very strict traditions in every facet of their society. Like I said though, it is very good for him to know his history and the history of the land where he was born.
@elderlyoogway7 жыл бұрын
Well, you pretty much said. It's important for a human being to feel connection to some culture, ethic and place. Even if it isn't logical, it's on human nature to find belonging, origin. If you're born knowing you're from other place, your instinct will search to know about this place.
@disarray82447 жыл бұрын
Hidekijapak7, I'm not sure if you're responding to me or not. I want to say that I agree with everything you said. However, I think you missed my point. I was responding to the thought that Maddox shouldn't be forced into the culture of the USA. I pointed out that he has been here since he was a baby. We are his culture. I was simply saying he has no need to assimilate. Assimilation simply means to take in a culture or belief and understand it. If anything he would be assimilating to Khmer culture because he would have to adapt/understand their customs.

あ Layla Malinday あ it is definitely something that should be made more mainstream. it is informative of something most people would never know about since most of Hollywood is about overdramatizing. It's incredible that Thais, who are just next door, have no clue about the Khmer Rouge. An untold story even in most American schools. This story, and the other stories of even Hitler, need to practically hit the big screen in the new millennium because it's essential. Most of my students don't know who Hitler is.
@LWLPnewChannel7 жыл бұрын
The things is there's tons and tons of WWII movies and yet there's barely anything that involves other atrocities like what happened in Cambodia, Armenia, Rwanda and so on
@benjamincefkin20127 жыл бұрын
Arsenio Buck Where the hell did you get the idea that Thai people don't know about the Khmer Rouge? Thousands of Thai people provided assistance to Cambodian refugees fleeing across the border, and hundreds more, including both my parents, worked and volunteered in refugee camps all over Thailand. Why do you think there is virtually no communist presence in Thailand today? We saw what could happen with an extreme communist regime, and the Thai government curtailed, and continues to curtail anything they see heading toward that direction. Moreover, the fighting spilled over into Thailand more than once and Thai-Cambodians were slaughtered along with other minority groups in Cambodia at the time. This wasn't very long ago. Most of the population of Thailand today was alive during the Khmer Rouge era. Do you think we just blocked it out of our memories?
@savanngim48267 жыл бұрын
Arsenio Buck I'm a Cambodian in America and throughout grade school and high school, not once there was any history lessons about Cambodia
@arsenioseslpodcast31437 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Cefkin Oh, come on. Are you talking about the top universities in Thailand? International schools? I can ask 10 students from universities outside the top 2-3 and they wouldn't know. Regardless if you think Thais are helping Cambodian (which I must declare as false, given the fact the way the Cambodians and Burmese are treated as slave workers in Thailand) you're misguided as the rest. Go to the majority of government schools and ask Mattayom students between 10th-12th grade....they wouldn't have a clue. Other than Thammasat, Mahidol and Chula, not many people know, even the Thais over 30 years old. Let's even ask the students about Joseph, Adolf, Benito, etc.....all men of caucasian/anglo saxon descent (excluded Benito) and maybe 60% doesn't know. The problem with this is if they know who these genocidal maniacs are, the racism within Thailand would be much less towards Indians, Africans and African Americans. Like another commenter said, let's talk about the Rwanda genocide.....I can tell you right now 99.2 percent of the Thai population is unaware of the atrocities in Africa. With that being said, the oblivious state brings ignorance. If Thais know about the atrocities, outside the Khmer Rouge, the racism could possibly decrease. Since most of them are unaware, even of the Vietnam war (which 2.5 million Vietnamese died at the hands of white americans *negativing the dozens of blacks who were forced into conscription), it brings an insane amount of ignorance towards the Burmese, Cambodians, and especially Africans.
@arsenioseslpodcast31437 жыл бұрын
Outside of the minute 1,000 Thais that quite possibly might know what took place next door, it brings an insurmountable amount of ignorance amongst the population because Thais believe they're better than Cambodians and Burmese (the battle in ayutthaya). So, knowing about world history and genocides could really help a nation so desperate as Thailand today. Period.

I myself am a Cambodian American and I can’t express how much it means to have a movie dedicated to showing all of the hard struggles we’ve been through. I live in Phnom Penh before I moved to America and during everyday of my life my parents tried to work hard and earn money so I could have a good education when they never had it. I would go to school to succeed ins own thing and when we first stepped into America it was like a dream, people had food, shelter, they didn’t have to struggle for anything they wanted, food was at stores instead of hot and steamy markets and it was fresh, not as moldy and raw as it was in Phnom Penh. I’m truly great Full Angelina directed this. And I also hope that Maddox realizes how big his culture is...

When you tell people you're Cambodian-American, they look at you like they've never heard of the word Cambodia before... only in fairytales of far, far away places. Then you have to be like, "You know... Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Philippines..." and then they're like, "OH YEAH, OKAY!" My Grandmother and her 5 youngest children (including my father) escaped Cambodia after the Vietnam War and the rise of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. They came to America as refugees of war, they were sponsored by a church in South Bend, Indiana. My Grandpa (my Dad's father) never came back from the Vietnam War and my Dad's older brother was never seen again after he was taken by the Khmer Rouge, and my Grandma had to leave behind 4 of her oldest to survive on their own in Cambodia's ruins and take the youngest to America, to safety. She had 10 children, 1 life already taken in war, my Dad being 9 out of 10. She's still alive today and celebrated her 91st birthday in February. She's the strongest woman I know, she fights and fights and she never gives in. This is a story that needed to be told, many years ago. But now that it is, I hope that people will educate themselves on what really happened in Cambodia and that the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot and the Genocide were as real as could be. And we, as Cambodian-Americans, owe our ancestors the honor of learning as much as we can about our past to guide as along in our future endeavors.

agb1953 plus I would rather lose some money showing something and creating a masterpeice than making a movie that is just a popcorn movie that makes a couple billion at the box office like F&F franchise. Just my opinion, and I am not saying this movie is going to have a 10/10 rating.

I'm Cambodian and Angelina is so inspiring. Being in America my whole life, this story and history is shamefully very foreign to me but I know that it is me. I've never seen a movie portraying Cambodia so I'm proud she can show the beauty of the culture and not just the atrocity of the genocide.

Angelina Jolie is not only just a famous celebrity that longs for fame, she is a person that can speak out and make messages, exactly like this. She has the power to open they eyes of people. Cambodian-Americans around the world will be happy to watch this, including me. My family was affected greatly by the Khmer Rouge, they had to travel day and night and had to sacrifice many things.

HaveYourWay 1984 Gotta find it funny when people blame Angelina for Brad and Jen splitting when he was the one that cheated not to mention their marriage was already over long before he met Angelina, you could see it in how they acted around each other, he was just using Angelina as an excuse to leave his wife.

Homegirl needs to "nyam" some dumplings! I sure hope they have some Cambodian Rock on this, It's really some of the best rock-and-roll anywhere. Singularly unique and was a treasure almost lost because of the almost successful cultural flatlining the Khmer Rouge inflicted on their own people. How such evil takes root, cows a nation, and rises to power still escapes me, but human history is full of such confounding shit happening time and again, and again.

Learn what? Angelina needing to fatten up or that great Cambodian Rock music?
@garolstipock7 жыл бұрын
Growing up around Caribbean's in London. Also why I used the dumpling reference as the food of choice.
@garolstipock7 жыл бұрын
Just a slang turn of the word "yam" or "eat". They said it plenty, I loved the food and have been around it all my life. No "learning" involved, the first time you hear it, you know what it means just like any slang or new informal phrase, like how we misuse the words, "awesome" or "cool" or "sexy" or "asshole", but know exactly what is intended by its use during speech. Nothing needed to be studied to understand it. Most used it from time to time to talk about eating food, especially when chilling out comfortably around friends and family and when there was no need/want/reason to use the queens formal english while in conversation and people rather relaxed and were talking in the accent and patterns of where they were born. I'd wager that the whole of the UK, the commonwealth and most of the New York City tri-state area knows what the word means if you were to use it around there as much Caribbean colloquialisms, slang, and speech has become familiarized or normalized in these areas. No rocket science here, the whole world does the same in their own way to express or converse and create turns of words as a form of expression. Each unique group or subculture has their "thing" that distinguishes them from the mainstream.
@garolstipock7 жыл бұрын
Didnt know that. Good to know that. Consider this a happy coincidence. There is a fair amount of phonetics in many slang words where they are spelled just the way they sound and sound just the way they are spelled. I guess that's what made "nyam" find it's way into common Carribean expression. I don't think their use has anything to do with a connection to Cambodia at all. In this instance, and in many Carribean slang-like terms, think of the sound or act being performed and not the word per-se as being the reason for the descriptive term and how it's spelled. My marginal knowledge of Cambodian culture comes as a westerner hearing and seeing what pieces of it I do from afar on the news, tv, radio, etc. So. . .little to none. BUT. I was introduced to that great Cambodian rock of the 60's and 70's by the parents of a school friend of my brother, just being over his house and his dad played some tracks (don't know what it was) in the background. They were great tunes, I don't understand or speak Cambodian at all, so I don't know what the songs were about or what they were saying, but to hear both the accent and 'words' in song, it all harmonized and complemented the music being played so perfectly. It all made for great stuff to listen to. I grew up, moved to the USA and forgot about it for ages until I stumbled upon 'Dengue Fever', which reminded me all over again of that great music.
