2nd scene: JC has a charming moment of military-appropriate, dominance flirtation and level-setting with Mav, who gracefully checks his ego, even knowing he's being thrown out by his future students, and is visited by the Ghost of Xmas past in the Great Balls of Fire montage.

3rd scene: Mav surrenders to his hubris and fate, realizing he will be responsible for the deaths of both his best friend and godson.... only to be spared by this version's Iceman, his original nemesis, and the most worthy wingman in his class that was passed over by his nepotism and need for resolution with his own demons. The camaraderie between these characters is entirely earned by the character arcs by this point in the film: Hangman's pompous bravado is suddenly charming. He's had to swallow his own pride, but receives his own vindication in that final moment. You're cheering for all of them.
