I read it 20 years ago, 900+ pages in about 5 days while recovering on a beach in Bali after a climbing trip. Hands down, my favorite book of all time. I remember hearing rumors of an A-List actor buying the rights to make it but never saw anything. I kept thinking how the hell are they going to stuff it all into 3 hours. Then, a week ago I pulled it off my shelf and handed it to my girlfriend. And now this....

just so you know, this was set in 1980s Bombay, India. Gregory david roberts has actually acted as an extra on some of the bollywood movies. I hope they also show his time in Afghanistan. novel is awesome btw.

Somebody please hire Charlie for the next season of House of the Dragon.

Some years back it was supposed to be Jonny Depp doing the title role but now Charlie seems to pull it of well .

Charlie Hunnam is such a talented actor. That scene in Sons of Anarchy where Jax discovers Taras body was absolutely gut wrenching and quite frankly an Oscar worthy performance.

This book was my treat every Sunday during the 2 hour drive home. Can't say how many times id stay in the driveway to get to the end of a chapter. Huge challenge to get it in a film so I'm gonna keep an open mind.

This book had to be a series rather than a movie. A movie will not be suffice to justify it. 😭

I haven't checked in on the film adaptation of this book in ages. The last time I checked in, Johnny Depp was in talks to star and/or had the rights to this. I open KZfaq and this pops up....pure excitement. Honestly though I love and cherish this book so much that it will have to be some miracle for this adaptation to be even close to the love I have for the book. 🤞

Been waiting for this movie for ever. In 2018 I was in Luang Prabang, Laos, and got talking to an Aussie. He said his girlfriend had rented space in Bangkok and sublet to Gregory Roberts, where he wrote the book. It's been a long time coming but can't wait to see this movie to see if it lives up to the fab book.

Always wondered if they'd make a movie out of this book - hopefully it adapts well to the screen because there's a lot of ground to cover. I remember going to Leopold's cafe a long time ago (it's much more touristy in real life, haha) but it was interesting to see somewhere I'd read so much about in the flesh.

Charlie Hunnam was spotted in Rishikesh a couple of years back (holy city), I was expecting this for quite some time :)

Loved this book! It captivated me from start to finish and I laughed and cried the whole way through it. Some beautiful poignant moments and great lessons in the book. I don't recall the slum getting burnt down.....it was a while ago though 🤷‍♂️

The best adaptation of a book (that I've read and then watched) that I've ever seen. Loved the book so much I was understandably anxious that the screen version would be shit. Fears 1000% allayed by this stunning, gripping and charming series. (Charlie had exactly the right idea - long-form TV a much better choice than 2/3-hour feature..) I'm so glad Depp didn't get there first, no slight to the guy but I really don't think it would have worked (imo). Subham is an absolute joy, and their relationship (conveyed via the 2 actors' genuine screen chemistry) is heart-melting! What an amazing show. Hands down the best thing on the small screen. Now for the bad news... Looking at you Apple... How DARE you?! It fkn KILLS me that these guys are not able to finish the AMAZING work they've ALL done (and I mean EVERYONE on the production, right down to the chai lady..). GUTTED. How about we crowd-fund season 2, 3.... ?

For everyone asking, it’s a 12 episode series, not a movie. What I’ve read is that 3 episodes will be released on the premier date of October 14th then new episodes will be shown weekly thereafter.

As a Book, Shantaram is prolly the best work of fiction with a bit of real life experiences. I am not so worried about the performance coz Charlie Hunam is an incredible actor when it comes to portraying a Character. I am a lil sceptical about the Screenplay. I hope it does justice to the Book.

2004 I had just read this book in Melbourne, because I was going back to India within a month. I was waiting at Mumbai airport for a friend to fly in.... A man walks past me, it was Gregory David Roberts. I knew only becuase of the small image of him in the back pages of the book. I had to go up to him, we chatted for over an hour, I was in disbelief that I was talking to this man, and Nazeer was with him. I have selfies as proof...! Its still blows me away today. He told me he was having talks with Johnny Depp about making a movie He also mentioned his mother and father re-mortaged their house in St Kilda, which is where I was from....so he could write the book.. Just wild.

It's similar ( in some way) to City of Joy with Patrick Swayze. Can't wait to see this movie ^^
